When it comes to Latin compositions, it just doesn't get any better than the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. This classic tune is nicely adapted for young players, featuring the brass on the one note melody and the saxes on the more than one note bridge. The easy-flowing groove and solid ensemble writing help insure a great sounding arrangement for any band.

Jazz Classics for the Young Ensemble - Grade 3 This cornerstone of the swingin' Count Basie era helped define a style and lend identity to one of the greatest big bands of all time. This recent adaptation by bassist Boris Koslov presents the marvelous Mingus composition in a rich setting containing a variety of musical styles. Opening in a quasi-classical style, the piece quickly shifts to a straight ahead swing tempo with angular horn riffs and creative melodies - characteristically Mingus! The rhythmic groove alternates between swing and a 6/8 feel, and there are solo opportunities for trumpet and trombone.

This is one of the trademark tunes from the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Starting with the saxes playing the first statement of the theme, the arrangement builds up intensity with each repeat as layers of sound are added in true Kenton fashion. Skillfully arranged for young players.
