In 1775, at the ripe old age of 19, Mozart decided to write a few violin concerti. His efforts that year (among other things) provided us with five of the greatest such works in musical history. We also include the Rondo Concertant, which Mozart wrote as a replacement third movement for this concerto, though it later became a popular piece on its own standing! Max Bruch's sumptuous Romantic masterpiece has remained an audience favorite since it was published in 1868. Its dedicatee, the great violinist Joseph Joachim, had considerable input and, as in the Brahms concerto, his contributions add to its unstoppable lustre. Viotti, an Italian virtuoso violinist, was a prolific composer (he wrote 29 violin concerti, of which this is the most famous) who gained popularity in the court of Marie Antoinette and fled to England after the French Revolution. He had tremendous influence on the succeeding generation of composers, and is an immediate predecessor to the Romantic Era. A beautiful work for any classical violinist. Mozarts third violin concerto, KV216, sometimes called the Strassburg for a Strassburger tune in its Rondo, is scored for a rather simple, chamber-sized orchestra. The Adagio of this concerto must be the most sublime movement in any of his violin concerti and one of the most beautiful and quintessentially Mozartian in his entire uvre. Perhaps the most memorable of his five violin concerti, it is quintessential Mozart and an indispensable addition to any serious violinists repertoire.
