Variants on a Shaped Note Tune was commissioned by the Homewood Middle School Band (Homewood, AL), and was premiered at the Alabama Music Educators Association Conference in January 2006. The title refers to a traditional early American singing style based on reading a system of shapes rather than musical notes. Based on the Scottish tune Pisgah from the shape note songbook, The Sacred Harp, the Variants begin simply with a statement by unison clarinets. From there begins a series of distinctive variations featuring an ingenious mix of styles, tempos, and instrumentation. Based on the familiar hymn Abide With Me, this unique composition develops variations based on fragments of the original melody. Elements of the hymn are skillfully incorporated into a variety of styles, from slow flowing phrases to lively and rhythmic themes, before the hymn is gloriously presented near the end of the piece.

Claude T. Smith's easy, effective set of variations is destined to become a classic grade III overture. This is easy festival programming at its best.

First published in 1979, this masterful work for solo flute and band is available again in this newly engraved edition. The solo part displays a variety of styles from beautifully expressive lyric lines to spirited faster passages, all supported wonderfully by the full ensemble. Dur: 8:30

Based on Mozart's keyboard variations on Ah! Vous Dirai-je, Maman, K. 265, the main theme of this arrangement is also known as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. MusicWorks - Grade 4 First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomizes his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best.
