She is torn between a life with him in America and her longing for the culture of her childhood. From time to time she plays a music box given to her by her parents (Sunayama theme), bringing a flood of homeland memories. Based on a familiar folk tune, Johnnie Vinson has created an appealling set of variations with an occasional nod to Beethoven, who used the same melody in his Theme and Variations for flute and piano (Op. 107, No. 7). With each variation featuring a different section of the band, this work utilizes a mixture of contrasting meters and styles. Dur: 4:00

The well-known and touching Irish ballad Danny Boy forms the basis of this emotionally charged setting by Richard Saucedo. A true study in orchestration and textures, this piece begins quietly at first, then builds steadily to a full ensemble climax before returning to a soft and delicate close. A wonderful change of pace.
