First published in 1940, this work became a highly respected and widely performed Percy Grainger work. It is unique in that it employs a high drone on the note C, which is sounded throughout the entire piece. This new critical edition includes a full score and errata for the parts. Composed in 1942, Barber's Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organized musical modules. The opening theme has a definite American flavor, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round off the work. Expertly transcribed for symphonic band by Dr. George Schneider, this is certain to find its place in the standard repertoire for mature ensembles. Dur: 11:00 (Grade 5)

Conveying a spirit of hope and inspiration, this powerful overture (translated Ever Forward) features a diverse mix of styles and moods. The opening fast theme scored for the full ensemble is rich with vitality and drive. A legato middle section trades themes from section to section and provides a variety of dynamic and emotional contours. The final fast section starts quietly propelled by an incessant timpani figure, then steadily builds to an impressive full band conclusion. Dur: 5:45 (Grade 4)
