The Sunrise, Haydns fourth quartet in the op. 76 set, gets its popular name because, in the opening Allegro, the first violin rises slowly out of the sustained harmonies of its accompaniment to announce the principal themejust as the sun rises out of the East, as it were.

This third of six, the well-known 'Emperor' quartet, has a theme and variations subject of the slow movement which dories from a Croatian folk melody and was commissioned to be the Austrian National Anthem or 'Emperor's Hymn.' It became Haydn's personal favorite tune.

This fifth quartet in the op. 76 group of six shows Haydn at his full musical maturity. Commonly known as the Largo, it is of haunting beauty.

Haydns second quartet contains the famous 'witches' minuet' in which the violins, in octaves, lead with a rather spooky tune that is them imitated by the lower instruments, making quite an unearthly canon.

This final string quartet in Haydns op. 76 group introduces a witty trio utilizing the E-flat major scale throughout, ascending and descending with the most inventive counterpoint. Papa Haydn at his best.

This string quartet, one of a group of six, were written in 1797-8, during Haydn's last period of composition. They are quite expressive, with delightful touches. The G major 'Erddy' quartet is a lovely piece and his highly recommended.
